Why The World Keeps Surprising and Exhausting You - understanding the unpredictable!

Updated: Jun 18

There's a particular type of mental exhaustion that comes from seeing the world differently, even on a “normal” day

A few meetings. Some emails. A supermarket on the way home which seems “normal” and yet by the evening you are out of mental energy, with a heaviness that makes even the simplest decision feel challenging.

If you're neurodivergent, you probably recognise this feeling. You may have beat yourself up for it - feeling like you’re somehow inadequate, unable to cope with “normal” day to day activities? Perhaps you understand this simply as the cost of simply being autistic or ADHD.

What if there was another way to explain it? What if it was your nervous system doing exactly what it's designed to do, but in a world that was never designed for your way of thinking?

Put simply, your brain is a prediction machine

This is something explained by neuroscience: your brain does not passively receive the world. It actively predicts it.

Our brains constantly model themselves on the outside world to reduce the surprise factor. Every moment of every day, our nervous systems are using a prediction model to interpret what is about to happen, what you'll hear, see, feel, be asked to do. When prediction and reality match, you stay calm and in control. When they don't and when the world surprises you, emotional and mental dysregulation can occur.

This is the fundamental logic of how all human brains operate. It means that the mental depletion and emotional overwhelm neurodivergent people so often experience as meltdown, burnout or shutdown is the accumulated cost of a nervous system that struggles to predict the world.

Your nervous system is getting the wrong signals by trying to predict an environment that is mis-aligned resulting in more prediction errors being made.

The compliance trap; the cost

So how do our nervous systems typically respond to persistent prediction error?

Often, with overwhelm and then by masking...

Masking is a rational response; it sometimes has its place but it comes at a cost. When your model of the world consistently produces prediction errors of a neurotypical world, when the social rhythm is off, when the sensory environment keeps overwhelming you, when the unspoken rules remain unspoken and when implicit never becomes explicit - our nervous systems reach for the most available and often practiced solution. It learns to perform what others expect; the incongruent noise stops and you appear to coexist with others.

The problem is not the masking itself, we all do it to some degree neurodivergent or not. The problem is the cost for the neurodivergent mind when masking is deployed universally and consistently.

Cognitive energy is finite – we’ve all heard of the spoons analogy in neurodivergence “I’m out of spoons today” meaning I cannot engage any more. When you have to perform to fill the gap between your reality and the reality of the world and society, you cannot see your own model mismatch, create your own meaning of the world, or manage your own energy. Masking doesn't just tire you out, it disperses your energy rather than directing it.

This is the compliance trap. The adaptations you’re making are sometimes necessary and sometimes genuinely worth the cost. However, adaptation when not targeted in the areas it is genuinely needed for means the energy starts running at a loss; equalling burnout.

What is needed is a way to help you to manage those adaptations seeing it as something more nuanced and more sustainable: developing the self-awareness to know where your cognitive energy is going, why, and whether that reflects your own values and genuine comfort, or to “fit”. Once you have that information you can see where a degree of strategic adaptation may be a conscious, autonomous choice. This transitions you from forced compliance to true self-directed navigation of the world on your terms.

The question shouldn’t be "how can I fit?" It should be "which of my adaptations can be mine through choice and where I’ve chosen to use that energy and which are forced?"

It’s important to examine where you are - to see how your energy fluctuates. Think of your nervous system as having three recognisable states: the flat signal of a system that has withdrawn to conserve, the clear present signal of genuine comfort, and the electric heat of a system running at its edge. They all have their place and can be used once we understand the mechanism and the environment that makes them happen

You need to understand what pushes you toward the edge and what flattens you into withdrawal. Often energy spent riding on the “edge” in one setting is energy that isn't available elsewhere. The purpose is to create a dynamic state that allows you use the three positions strategically - a balanced and yet dynamic state.

Understanding the pattern underneath

Before you can ask where the energy is going, you need to ask where did this way of moving through the world come from?

We don’t just land in adulthood. We arrive carrying information from past experiences – a classroom that required you to sit still, a social situation that required performance, a relationship in which being yourself felt inappropriate. These experiences become the architecture of prediction. The nervous system understands what it thinks it can expect from the world and those early predictions shape the way we model ourselves on the world.  The role of coaching is to see that, observe it and see if that is the meaning you want to take from the world

It is important to stay curious about the patterns that led you to where you are and the adaptations made along the way. What your nervous system is actually protecting you from? What predictions it’s making, and where did it learn to make them?

“What would it mean to understand yourself and the responses you make in a world not designed for you?  And what would it mean to adjust those with free will?

This is the foundation on which everything else is built.

Changing how you interact with the world

We aim to bring you agency and autonomy to define your existence to reach your ideal state

"Freedom is not escape from our nature. It is the courageous and intelligent navigation of it”

You find the freedom to define your own meaning, your own relationship to your experience, your own sense of what a life looks like for you that’s not contingent on the world becoming more accommodating however that needs to happen too. It is the freedom to decide which parts of the world you manage, which environments are worth the cost, which relationships help you restore and conserve energy.

It is the shift from asking "how do I fit into this world?" to asking "what is my meaning of the world, and how do I want to live in it?"

In practice this looks like developing an increasingly honest view of your own cognitive architecture, what generates the most prediction error and where you are most fully yourself. It’s making conscious, strategic choices about adaptations and using it with care.

What flourishing actually looks like

Its important to recognise that flourishing and adapting your model is not a permanent state of ease. It’s not necessarily the complete absence of challenge or surprise. It’s more the condition in which your nervous system is less “fight or flight”. You can manage your energy as you understand the friction points and operate more intentional predictions based on self-awareness. You start to understand your relationships as more reciprocal because you understand the energy flow. You understand what you want and need.

This brings you to the point where you are being autonomous and you find your  individual meaning.

Flourishing with difference, strategically and honestly
